About:
Hugh Dunnit and the Murder at Mc'Guilty Mansion is a 2D interactive visual novel that I worked on as a participant in the UT EGaDS! 2020 Game Jam in September 2020. Working in a team of seven students we were given a mystery theme "something missing" and had less than three days to plan, create, and submit a completed game. Hugh Dunnit and the Murder at Mc'Guilty Mansion won the Award for Best Narrative.
Team size: 7 Platform: PC Engine: Unity Published on: itch.io Software I used: Google Docs, Unity, Discord
My Role: Narrative Designer, Editor, Writer
Responsibilities:
For this project, I collaborated with the six other students to come up with the concept after receiving the theme of "something missing". I collaborated with the team to come up with initial storyline, characters, and gameplay. After an initial draft was written including the opening and initial ending, I was responsible for coming up with and writing the clues the player finds, the in-game character interactions, the scene after the interactive section, and revising and editing the rest of the story to ensure a cohesive narrative from start to finish. I collaborated with team members to design and set up level. I assisted in creating asset lists, defined goals and stretch goals, managed workloads, provided feedback and notes on art and gameplay, and assisted in gameplay testing.
In-Game Examples of Work:
Clue Text:
Clue text appears when players interact with different items in the scene. The text provides the player with information to help them determine their next step.
Character Dialogue:
Character dialogue is used to convey information to the player, move the story along, and show the different characters' personalities. Interacting with certain items in the scene unlocks new dialogue for different characters.
